Now That's Science!

Tuesday's Tip

I am getting my certification in Fitness Nutrition, and even though I am only 2 days in, I have learned so much! Everyone knows that a carrot is healthier than a piece of cake, right? The obvious reason is because carrots are vegetables and cake is sugar, but the less obvious has to do with nutrient density. Foods that are high in nutrient density are what we want the vast majority of our day to consist of. If a food manages to be loaded with nutrients but doesn't weigh much, it is high in nutrient density (and vice versa). Think about it, you would have to load a TON of spinach leaves into a bowl for them to even register on a scale, yet it is full of fiber, iron, and protein. This scientifically made sense of how I was able to lose weight and keep it off- I base the majority of my day around healthy foods and save the unhealthy foods once a day at the end of the night. So, there you have it, straight from the books AND straight from a real-life story!

  1. Interesting, I never thought about nutrient density before. I can't wait to find out even more great facts in the days to come :)
