Make Vegetables Count

Tuesday's Tip

When cooking vegetables, steaming is the way to go. This method cooks them quickly which helps keep the nutrients in them rather than being cooked out. If you're going to eat veggies, you want to make them count, right? To steam vegetables, fill a pot of water up just enough until it touches the steamer basket (the one with all of the little holes in it), bring to a boil, add veggies into steamer basket, and place a lid on top. Cook time will vary based on the vegetable you are using, but none exceed 10 minutes. These veggies will be fresh, look vibrant in color, and be just what your body wants to satisfy its nutritional needs!

*Don't have a steamer basket? Have no fear! You can also steam vegetables in a pan that is large enough that the vegetables are able to sit in one layer. Fill the pan up with about a half inch of water and bring to a boil. This will happen quickly because there is so little in there. Add the vegetables and place the top on so that the steam stays inside. If you notice that there is no steam generating, simply add some more water.
