Deli Style

Healthy Hump Day Recipe

I was watching the Today Show per usual this morning, and they had a segment called 6 Months to a 6-Pack featuring Joy Bauer, the nutrition and health expert for the Today Show. The 3 contestants of this segment were given 1 minute to make healthy choices for a sandwich, but there were some options that would have made their sandwich's calorie count and fat percentage significantly higher, so they had to be careful! This inspired me to write about the lunch that I pack for Seth and myself nearly everyday- a hearty and healthy sandwich loaded with delicious and nutritious options. There are so many variations to this sandwich, so you can really make it your own and enjoy your midday meal.

Savory Sandwich

Ingredients

-2 slices of 100% whole wheat bread
-6 slices of thinly shaved turkey breast
-1/4 cut spinach
-1 thick slice of tomato
-6 pickle chips
-3 cut olives
-1/2 tbsp mustard

Directions

1. Lay out 1 slice of bread and pile on all ingredients in their listed order. Then top with other slice of bread.

*By using 100% whole wheat bread, you are getting the most out of the grains and staying full for longer!

*Replace the meat with one of your favorite deli style meats or even grilled chicken!
*Load other veggies like onion or lettuce based on your preference!
*Use mustard instead of mayo for enhanced flavor and way less calories!
*Toast your bread first to give your sandwich a real deli feel!
*Leave out cheese in this sandwich and you won't even miss it because of all of the other flavorful inrgredients!
